Noir Is the New Black wasn't always supposed to look like what it is right now.
When @mrdrkmtr and @fabricesapolsky put together the project, the idea was to create a #comics and #graphicnovel version of the #blacknoir literary sub-genre.

Noir stories through a Black lens set during the Great Depression. But one conversation changed everything.

One Black creator told us: "I'd love to contribute but I don't want to write a story set in the past."

That gave us the opportunity to think about our concept and expand it through space and time.

Same vision. Bigger scope. And an infinite number of stories the way our creators wanted to create them.

There's less than FIVE days left on our Season Two Finale campaign and we hope you'll be curious to join our fantastic creators and their stories. Whether it's THE WINTERFIELDS or LITTLE ROCK FILES or any of the other stories we released…

Today, I did TWO store signings in Pennsylvania!
First stop: @popcultureshoppe in Wellsboro, a cute little town in rural PA. It was shockingly attended for a 10am-12pm session. Had a great time and Julian and Anja made me feel at home.

This is an @enidbalam appreciation post.
When I first saw Balam's portfolio in 2018, I was not blown away, but I knew he had a lot of potential. My Spider-Sense told me he was different. As in special.
I got him a short gig as guest artist on the Omni series I was editing for Humanoids.
Then we met at shows on the circuit. And we developed a friendship.
A couple years ago, I offered him to work with me on a project (we're still working on it in the background). And as time went on, I got to know him better.
Balam is such a fantastic guy. Not just a great artist. His mind is brilliant. We can talk about mysticism, about faith, about History, about society, about food… Every topic can lead to a profound and deep conversation.
It's not every day that you meet someone that you're looking forward to meeting again right after you leave them.
But he's that guy for me.
I'm not just glad he's my friend. I'm glad he's in my life to teach me about stuff, to give me a perspective I never thought about.
Thank you Balam. I'm looking forward to our next conversation… And also for people to read our crazy amazing creator owned book!!!

It's May 27. You're tempted to tag me or write me to talk about a certain NOIR series coming out today. I'd strongly advice you not to do so. But let me tell you this: right now, the only NOIR thing that matters to me is NOIR IS THE NEW BLACK. Sure, that anthology probably wouldn't have existed had I not originated and co-created the other NOIR series. But NOIR IS THE NEW BLACK is my priority right now.

When Trowa Christopher Harris and myself first started talking about creating an anthology celebrating Black voices together in 2020, we talked about culture. We talked about justice. We talked about creator's rights. Substance was always a priority. NOIR IS THE NEW BLACK isn't a commercial product designed to sell toys or t-shirts. It's a selfless work of art celebrating Black excellence of which I'm simply the witness. Editing NOIR IS THE NEW BLACK isn't like editing any other series. Every story requires a different kind of role. Sometimes it's working closely with the creators. Sometimes it's simply leaving them the room to do their thing.
I think the #EisnerAwards judges recognized all that when they nominated our series.
In two months, at Comic-Con International, we might walk out empty handed or with a trophy. But we already won. NOIR IS THE NEW BLACK was the first original graphic novel published by FairSquare Graphics.
And it's going to be back in less than two weeks for it's very last crOwdf**ding. If you never picked up an issue, it's time to jump on the NOIR train with us right now. The link is in the comments or in bio.

Don't do it for the publisher. Don't do it for the editors, me and Trowa Christopher Harris.
DO IT FOR THE CREATORS.
Without them, there would be no book. And in this case, for Noir Is the New Black Season 2, we had a fantastic team of black creators: Joe Illidge, Greg Burnham, Chris Crosser, Quinn McGowan, Toyin Ajetunmobi, David Cal Alonso, DC Hopkins, Ernest Dickerson, Rose Geddes, Julian Shaw, Tyrone Finch and Todd Harris. And let's not forget our terrific star cover artists Ken Lashley and Jamal Yaseem Igle.
This series has been a roller coaster since it started in 2020. It brought together 55+ black creators from all over the world. Every creator was able to tell their stories in their own words and keep 100% of their creative rights. Winning the Eisners and the Harveys would not just honor those creators, it would make their stories matter even more. Being recognized by an industry that did not always opened doors for minorities would be a huge opportunity.

I was assigned a Mac II SI with a greytone portrait 21" screen. It carried 8mb of Ram and 80mb of hard drive.
The standard of those days were Quark X-Press 3 and Photoshop 1.7.
It crashed a lot. There were no layers.
Mac OS was called "System 7" back then.

It really was another time.
I'm not really nostalgic of those tools.
After 6 months at the job, the company went bankrupt and I was unemployed for 15 months.
There was a big crisis in France in those years. But I persisted and things got better.

Though I'm now mostly an editor and a creator, I still design everything I can. And still use tricks I learned early on.

And the image here? Well, IYKYK. 🙃

What a whirlwind! May 14-15, @thedarkkristal and myself were guests at @scadseqa’s Editor’s Day for their Atlanta campus. Then immediately after I was back in NYC to attend @concradle put together by a sweet man called Seamus Keane. I had a blast and met two legends: James O’Barr and Al Milgrom.
I’m tired. I’m sick (concrud hello) and I could still use more dollars to pay bills, but hell yeah I love my life. #Comics are beautiful.

What a whirlwind! May 14-15, @thedarkkristal and myself were guests at @scadseqa’s Editor’s Day for their Atlanta campus. Then immediately after I was back in NYC to attend @concradle put together by a sweet man called Seamus Keane. I had a blast and met two legends: James O’Barr and Al Milgrom.
I’m tired. I’m sick (concrud hello) and I could still use more dollars to pay bills, but hell yeah I love my life. #Comics are beautiful.

The cat’s out of the bag. FairSquare Graphics just earned its second Eisner Nomination ever with NOIR IS THE NEW BLACK Season 2, in the Best Anthology category.
For all the amazing black creators who’ve worked so hard with me and @fromthedarkmatter on this project, this is a totally deserved recognition from our peers.
And we are honored to be in such incredible company. Congratulations to all the other nominees in all categories. Thanks to the judges.
The timing could not have been more perfect as we’re about to launch a campaign for our Season Finale. Don’t sleep on this one. We need as many of you as we can.

One more thing. Noir Is the New Black is the book that literally made FairSquare Graphics what it is today. It is a love letter to Noir comics from the most talented black creators in the world. From its inception to now, nearly 60 black writers, artists, color artists, cover artists, illustrators or letterers have been featured in the series. It’s #blackexcellence at its best. And though this nomination is for the most recent Season Two, everyone in the team considers that if we win, it’ll also be thanks to all the talents of Season One. This is also dedicated to them.
I am humbled by the fact that all these black creators trusted me and let me hold the mic for them. THEY are the stars of this and I hope we’ll collect the trophy together this July!

Just learned that Kenji Oba aka Space Sheriff Gavan passed away. I loved this series when I was a kid. But two years before it was even broadcasted, my grandma came back from a trip to Hong-Kong and offered me the die-cast metal action figure. My brother and I loved the design but we didn’t know anything about this hero. Then the series was broadcasted in France under a weird name (X-Or) and we loved the transmutation scenes. It was cheesy, super repetitive and villains were ugly but this was just fantastic to watch. A few years ago I decided to pay homage to Gavan by drawing this piece (it’s still here with me). Not many people in the US know about the Space Sheriff series but everywhere else it’s huge. Sayonara Mr Oba!

I am so humbled by the warm reception to the SMN/Intertwined bundle I put together for my 20years of Noir Comics anniversary.
If you swipe, you’ll see a few examples of the sketch cards I’m dropping in the set. It can either be a character from Spider-Man Noir or from Intertwined. And once I include them, I have no clue which one is which.

This is a very limited operation. So if you’re interested in buying a set, please don’t wait and send me a note.

And I might raffle a copy or two if you back our current Red Flower campaign for at least $75.

20 years of Noir Comics. Time flies, right?

I still remember like yesterday that day in December of 2006, in Kensington London, when I pitched the concept for Spider-Man Noir to Dave Hine.
At first, he said “that will never work.” Then, he changed his mind and we added layers & layers of pulp and Noir stuff to it.

Despite all the resistance of some sales and marketing folks, it was an outstanding success when it came out two years later and still is, to this day.

In 2016, I came back with Intertwined, alongside @frederic_pham_chuong, a hero’s journey from the perspective of an immigrant. There’s a lot of #SpiderMan in the main character, whose codename is the Spirit of the Earth.

This year, I’m 20 years old as a #comics creator. It’s a huge milestone. And I decided to celebrate it with you all. #Marvel just reprinted the first issue of Spider-Man Noir. I reprinted the first issue of Intertwined. And I packaged both, with an original hand drawn sketch card and an exclusive holofoil sticker.
You can only get this unique package from me. Either by sending me a DM or by buying it at shows.
My next schedule appearances are:

* May 2nd: FCBD at @nickscomicstrip in Danvers, MA.
* May 16-17: @concradle at the Aviation Museum in Long Island NY
